Housing

Moving out is a pretty big deal! It can be the best thing you've ever done, or it could be a costly and emotional nightmare.

The most important thing is to plan your move. Spend time figuring out the costs such as rent, bills, transport, furniture, cookware and school fees if you study. Living alone or sharing is tough if you don't have a source of income.

Before taking the leap and moving out…

Nearly every question you've got about moving out is answered at the Money Stuff website of the NSW Department of Fair Trading.

The reach out website has useful info on getting prepared to leave home.

See what you’re in for with share houses, such as your responsibilities and dealing with conflict with housemates.

Finding a place to live

There are plenty of ways to find a place to live. Try the local papers, bulletin boards at TAFE or uni, friends, student unions or well-known websites such as realestate.com.au and domain.com.au.

Are you leaving formal or informal care to live independently?

The Transition to Independent Living Allowance (TILA) provides one-off practical assistance of up to $1000 worth of goods and services for young people 15 to 25 years old who are leaving or have left some kinds of formal and informal care, to assist them to make a successful transition to independent living. TILA is used to purchase (or reimburse) approved goods and/or services related to a person’s specific needs, and can go towards starting employment, education or establishing a home
