Voting

Voting is both your right and your responsibility as an Australian. It is compulsory for all Australians to enrol to vote when they reach 18, though you can enrol when you turn 17. Failure to vote at an election usually results in a fine.

Enrolling can be done through the Australian Electoral Commission website, select ‘Voting’ or by completing a form at any post office. They also have a Frequently Asked Questions section. There is no need to enrol separately for Commonwealth, State and local elections - one form is all you need.
